How to Teach Your Cat Use the Scratching Post
The cat scratching post is a wonderful solution if you want a happy kitten and nice furniture, all in one.
As I wrote in my previous posts, it’s impossible to make your cat stop scratching. Declawing is not an option as well, because it’s an extremely painful procedure with many negative side-effects that will affect forever the health of your little furry friend.
But, when it comes to the cat scratching post, how to make sure that your kitty will actually scratch it? The answer is not that complicated. If you want your cat to stop scratching the sofa or the wooden writing desk, the scratching post has to be much more appealing than those pieces of furniture. How can you do that?
First, make sure that your scratching post is heavy enough. Imagine what would happen if your kitty starts scratching the post and it simply collapses down? It’s no fun at all, agree? Your cat will think the same and move on to funnier furniture, like your new solid leather armchair! If the cat scratching post is solid and heavy, your cat will enjoy giving it a good scratch and stretch out on it at the same time. Don’t forget that cats are powerful animals, so don’t underestimate their physical force! So, if you have a solidly built kitten, make sure the scratching post is well secured – attach it to the wall or put some extra weight on its base.
Another thing to consider is the scratching post’s length. Even a little kitten likes a tall post – this way he can scratch it, stretch on it and also climb it – an excellent game that is both useful and fun. Cats adore playing, so think about it as well when you choose your cat scratching post.
What else does your kitty like? A good meal, of course! If you install the scratching post near the area where you usually feed your cat, she’ll get used to if much faster. Plus, cats become very active around feeding hours – your kitty will enjoy having something good to scratch in the vicinity of her food bowl.
Even if your cat is already grown-up, she still enjoys to play, doesn’t she? Not to mention kittens – they could play all day long! Playing is the most natural and pleasant form of exercise – the kittens grow strong, active and full of life! Why not use their innate adorable skills as a means of attracting them to the cat scratching post? Put your cat’s favorite toys near the post, this way one game will naturally generate another – playing with the scratching post. You can also attach a soft toy with a string to the tip of the post – this one is my kitty’s favorite game!
Cats enjoy marking their territory. Don’t try to stop them, you’ll only make things worse! The best way of dealing with this is providing your kitty with an alternative – the cat scratching post.
